When looking for a suitable pest bird deterrent or solution it’s important to take note of the following:
- The type of pest bird you’re dealing with – pigeons, mynahs and sparrows require different approaches
- How many of them are there – just one, a couple or a lot – this will indicate the level of measures you’ll need to eradicate the problem (you might need a multi-pronged solution)
- When do you see them most – during the morning, afternoon, late afternoon or evening – this can tell you something about what drives their behaviour and can also help in deciding the best course of action
- Is there a visible food source in the area – this could be attracting the birds and simply removing the food source can resolve the problem
- Is there a Phoenix palm tree/s close by – pigeons especially love roosting in these trees due to the wonderful shelter it provides them
- Are there visible openings/gaps around the roof of the structure or close to pipes and air-conditioning units – this can show where they might be nesting.
It’s well worth it to deal with the problem as soon as possible, as bird numbers can increase rapidly which makes it a lot more tricky and more expensive to get under control. Excessive bird faeces can also pose a health hazard and damage property due to its acidic and erosive nature.
